So, you have been thinking about modeling for sometime now and you don’t know where to start. The industry can seem overwhelming and confusing. So let’s take a look at the steps to get start modeling, and how to go about looking for an agent. and to create a professional model portfolio.
Putting your best foot forward right from the start is key. if you are looking to get into modeling take it seriously. Modeling agents, do not need their time wasted. Create a portfolio that showcases you as a model and the type of modeling that you would be good for. Do not send in a portfolio taken from your iPhone or have a friend take your pics. Also don’t use a wedding photographer that is a friend because it is a different industry and they don’t know what the agents are looking for. Such as you wouldn’t hire an electrician to do your plumbing, so hire the correct type of photographer. Modeling is a business, not taking it seriously or investing in a proper model portfolio right from the start wastes everyone’s time in the industry and may just make you lose your chance at getting signed.
1.Create a model portfolio
Getting into modeling requires dedication, resilience, and a strategic approach. Firstly, it’s crucial to identify your niche within the modeling industry, whether it’s fashion, commercial, fitness, or niche markets like plus-size or petite. Next, focus on building a strong portfolio showcasing your versatility and unique look through a professional model portfolio. Most agents will require more than one “look”. The more images you have in your portfolio the more you can showcase yourself to the agents and eventually to clients. Creating your model portfolio is an investment in yourself and in your potential to book a job. It is your business card to the industry. So invest in yourself if you really are interested in modeling. You also don’t want to have to do this twice, doing it right the first time will save you time and money. Use a photographer such as us at Kevin Day Photography that specializes in this area. Get all the looks you think you will need and prepare yourself for them.
2. Prepare yourself for you session
Preparing yourself for your professional model portfolio is crucial to making it a successful session. Make sure that you pick out the right outfits “looks” that you will need. Depending on what package you choose, you should make sure that all the looks are different from one another and not all for example all denim looks. Bring extra clothing. If you book the model package 2 which is a 3 look session make sure you bring more than 3 outfits. Sometimes something does not fit correctly, or photograph well. So having extra stuff is always good. Before your session take a look at some Youtube videos on how to pose in front of the camera. I am definitely here to help you but you will get better photos if each frame is not orchestrated. The night before your session get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water for your skin to stay hydrated.
3. Finding an Agent
Research reputable modeling agencies and submit your model portfolio for representation, ensuring they align with your career goals. Look out for any scams in the industry. Sometimes they can be a little hard to spot. But a general rule is think of the market you are in. Here in New England, if you come across an agent that is using photos from high end fashion such as Prada or Gucci. that is a red flag since that is not this market. If you see an agent that shows local brands such as TJ Max or LL bean or Puma these are large brands but also local. If you come across an agent or photographer that is one and the same that is also a red flag. The agent should not be taking your photos out back. The agent can however recommend a set list of photographers that they recommend. Also look out for agents asking for a large sum of money to sign with them.
Additionally, maintain a healthy lifestyle to uphold physical fitness and grooming standards.
Finally, be prepared for rejection and criticism but stay persistent, continuously improving your skills and adapting to industry trends. With determination and perseverance, breaking into the modeling world is achievable.
