CHILDREN'S HEADSHOTS
Boston Children’s Headshot Photographer
Capturing the genuine personality of a child requires patience, energy, and experience. For over 18 years, I have been working with child actors and young models in New England, creating headshots that open doors to top agencies and casting directors.
My very first paid job was photographing a 5-year-old for a Boston modeling agency. That agency is still a client today. I know exactly what industry professionals are looking for, but more importantly, I know how to make your child smile naturally.
How do I go about getting my child into modeling?
To begin a modeling career, the first step is to create a strong portfolio. A portfolio should include a variety of photos that show different outfits and looks. For acting, you'll need two types of professional headshots: one commercial and one theatrical. Once you have the professional photos, start submitting them to agencies through their websites and look into casting companies. There are a lot of opportunities here in New England and Boston especially.
Why Professional Photos?
Modeling and Acting are a profession, and you should take it seriously. You wouldn't go to a job interview without a resume. So, you shouldn't go to castings or agencies without professional photos. Showing casting agents and modeling agents that you are serious is a great first step. Represent yourself and your child correctly from the start.
Why Your Child Needs a Professional Headshot
In the competitive world of acting and modeling, your child’s headshot is their resume. Casting directors are busy; they scan hundreds of photos in minutes. You want to make sure your child stands out and puts their best foot forward right from the start.
- First Impressions: An unprofessional photo (bad lighting, busy background) tells an agent you aren't serious. Make good first impression, This is a job opportunity after all so the same effort you would put into getting another job should be applied to this one as well.
- True Personality: We don't want "cheese" smiles. We want to capture your child's range—from thoughtful and serious to joyful and energetic. Getting your child's personality to stand out is important.
- Industry Standards: Kids' headshots have specific cropping and lighting rules. I ensure every image meets the technical requirements of Boston and NY agencies.
A Fun & Relaxed Studio Experience
My approach to photographing children is simple: High Energy and Fun. We play music, we talk about their hobbies, and we keep the mood light. I treat every child with respect, making them feel like the star of the show. When a child is having fun, the photos turn out spectacular.
Shy children can be a challenge but with our relaxed environment and casual approach we usually can put children at ease and have a fun and successful shoot.
Common Questions for Parents
What should my child wear?
Simple is best. Solid jewel tones (blues, greens, purples, pinks) work beautifully. Avoid white, pastels and black. Agents don't like black on children. Also avoid logos, busy patterns, or fluorescent colors that reflect onto the skin. Layers like a denim jacket or a hoodie can add texture. The focus must be on them and not their outfit. The clothing should enhance and not distract.
How often should we update the headshots?
Unlike adults, children change fast. The industry standard is every 12 months—or sooner if they have a growth spurt, lose teeth, or change their hairstyle significantly. If your child walks into an audition and doesn't look like their photo, it’s a wasted opportunity. You should always keep your headshot up to date. Don't miss an opportunity and waste a casting directors time. You might not get a second chance.
