For over a decade, the team at Kevin Day Photography has observed that models get overwhelmed when they do their first photoshoot for their portfolios and  headshots.  Actors lose themselves with too much make-up or poor clothing choice’s. This usually happens because of preparing themselves for the session in advance. And sometimes nerves.

With this in mind, we have compiled a list of tricks you can study as you prepare for your photoshoot. Practice makes perfect; with the following points in mind.

Allow your Natural Beauty to Shine

When clients are reviewing your portfolio, they are analyzing your natural look. Therefore, hiding your features under layers of makeup isn’t a good idea because it takes the focus off of your natural beauty.

When shooting for headshots, you should try to get photos that can act like blank canvases. So potential clients can visualize how you would look in a role or for selling their products. Allow your skin to shine on camera by either keeping it bare or by enhancing it with minimal makeup.

Rehearse Different Expressions and Movements

If you continue to make poses with the same expression in every picture during your photoshoot, the resulting portfolio might turn boring and monotonous.

With regards to acting specifically, you want agents to see that you’re versatile. Depending on the project, you can adorn both serious expressions as well as relaxed ones where you smile confidently. Of course, clients will only hire you if they think that the diversity you portray in pictures can translate onto the screen.

The most creative photoshoots feature a variety of poses that have been accomplished through continuous movement. Therefore, you shouldn’t forget to try out different positions to rest your hands and arms in. Remember, it’s likely that when you keep moving your limbs around, you might strike gold and perform a pose that highlights your best angles!
