Taking your first headshots for your modeling career? Don’t be nervous and exude confidence in your photos. You can learn to look great in headshots from here!
Are you ready to start your journey as a model? For some people, modeling is just a stepping stone to an acting career.
For others, it’s a dream. Whichever category you fit in, you need a killer headshot. The best headshot shows you for who you are while making you look approachable and confident. Here’s how to look great for headshots.
Clothing
You only need to worry about your top since the pants and shoes will not show. Sometimes we feel more confident in a complete outfit, especially regarding business attire. So go ahead, wear the entire outfit but prioritize comfort since you may have to stand a lot.
As for the shirt, keep it simple. Try to avoid busy distracting patterns and wear something solid-colored (jewel tones work best). You can make it come to life with texture or lace details, but otherwise, solid-colored is the best choice to highlight your face. Try your best to avoid white or pastels. White is very reflective, and the focus is no longer on you, but the shirt you are wearing.
Avoid logos or writing at all costs.
If you still need extra help, you can hire a stylist. Ask the photographer or find one online. It might give you some peace of mind.
Bring two to four outfits per look and finalize them with your photographer.
Face
It’s all about the face! For the men, do you have a beard? It would be best if you showed your entire range of look. That way, you can take some photos with the beard. Take a trimmer and shorten it for some photos before using a razor for a clean-shaven look.
Now for the women. You want to start with as little makeup as possible and work your way up since adding makeup is easier than subtracting it from your face.
You could begin with just some tinted moisturizer, blush, gloss, and mascara for more casual looks. Then as your looks get more formal, you can bump your makeup up.
Usually, photographers can provide you makeup artists. You should take advantage of them. These professionals have experience and know what looks good on camera.
A good tip is to come with your makeup done how you want so the artist can follow those lines. Remember, you need to look like yourself.
Hair
Take this opportunity to do different stuff with your hair. Wear it up and down. Go smoother and then a little messier, or change your part in the middle of the shoot.
Remember to do something you could accomplish yourself when a client chooses you from your headshot. That’s how they expect you to look. So nothing too perfect that you cannot recreate yourself.
Your hair should show movement and convey your personality. If you prefer straight or curly, don’t let the hairstylist do something wildly different.
Try not to use too much product because it may come through on camera. Remember, flyaways can be retouched.
