Getting work as a male model in the modeling industry is infinitely harder than for female models. That’s because there is an exponentially higher demand for female models, which results in less modeling work available for male models. Despite that, there are several types of male modeling jobs that aspiring models should be looking to pursue.
If you’re dedicated and understanding, do your research and learn to navigate through the modeling industry waters, you can easily find a job as a male model. Here are some types of modeling for men you should know about and perfect to break out into the industry.
1. Fashion Modeling
Fashion modeling is one of the most well-known and popular types of male modeling, and it includes both high fashion prints and runway work. Male models are given an opportunity to brand themselves through high fashion modeling. They get a chance to work alongside international supermodels, which progresses their careers significantly.
However, runway and high fashion modeling are notoriously tricky to get into, as male models are expected to be of a particular height and fit certain sizes. The standard height required is between 5’11” and 6’2”, as the designer clothes won’t fit them if they are shorter or taller.
2. Commercial Modeling
Commercial modeling offers the most variety and is the most lucrative type of male modeling in the industry. Men of varying shapes, heights, and sizes can find commercial opportunities. There is higher demand in commercial modeling, and most jobs are available readily.
Even though there are fewer restrictions in commercial modeling, some jobs require men to be at least over 5’9”. However, recently, shorter models are being appreciated and accepted.
3. Underwear/Swimsuit Modeling
Swimsuit or underwear modeling is versatile and gives male models the chance to work in high fashion and commercial campaigns. There are also runways dedicated to men’s underwear/swimwear, while designers have their own requirements and personal style. If a male model doesn’t fit one brand’s vision, they can be perfect for another brand.
In comparison with other modeling divisions, the swimwear and underwear modeling division is more forward-thinking. It doesn’t discriminate among models based on their height and physique, as different brands opt for different looks for their male models.
4. Fitness Modeling
There are several misconceptions surrounding fitness modeling. The mind immediately gravitates towards men with rippling muscles in muscle competitions and stage shows. The average fitness model doesn’t require that level of fitness to be break into the industry. The idea is to represent a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
Fitness models are primarily used for specific fitness events and campaigns. Like most types of modeling, fitness work has requirements for a flexible physique. The looks of the male model must be marketable to the target audience. Therefore, models with glowing skin, bright smiles, and healthy figures are given more preference and find more work.
