MODEL PORTFOLIO
In today’s world there are so many different types of models. You no longer need to be a certain size or age. But getting started in the industry can seem over whelming. At Kevin Day Photography we specialize in model portfolios and headshots for acting and business and are happy to help you navigate getting started.
We have been helping models create their portfolios for over 17 years. So, you have come to the right place!
Why is a model portfolio important?
A model portfolio is essential to show potential agents and clients who you are. Deciding how you fit into the industry is a keyway of deciding what package and what looks you should present to agents and potential clients. Having a professional portfolio is important to putting your best foot forward right from the start. This is your business card for the industry.
There are lots of terms that float around the industry such as model portraits, model portfolios, modeling headshot. What is the difference? It can be confusing, but these are all essentially the same thing. But some people get confused when an agent asks for a modeling headshot. People think it is just a headshot. But most agents need more than your headshot to represent you properly.
For models it is important to create a portfolio with the most diverse and polished looks you can. It is essential to have full and 3/4 shots along with a headshot.
The more looks that you have allows you to have a different shot for each potential client. For example, if you are going out for a casting to an athletic company then you would want to show them photos of you in athletic wear. So, this is an important shot to have for your portfolio, to potentially book this client.
If you are going out for a bank commercial, then a different headshot or modeling photo would be used, a business look. The general rule, the more looks you have the better. Each client is different and is looking for a different type of model.
Again, try and decide where you fit in the industry and try put those looks together for you book.
How do I plan for my modeling portfolio session?
Planning out what you are going to do before your portfolio is essential,
To get the most out of your session plan ahead. First decide which package is right for you and how many looks/outfits you will need.
Once you decide this then it is time to pick out your clothes.
Make sure your clothes are clean and free of stains and ironed before coming to the shoot. If you don’t think you can do this yourself, we have a wardrobe stylist as an add on to any of the packages. They will shop for you, pick out the looks you need and stay throughout your session to make sure each of your looks is perfect.
Picking out the right clothes is crucial to having an amazing portfolio.
Make sure all your clothes fit properly as we said above free of stains.
Avoid logos, text and anything that is distracting. Feel free to bring a few more looks then you need, and we can help you decide what works the best.
One last thing to think about is whether you would like to have a professional make-up artist added onto your shoot. This can make all the difference. The artists we work with have all worked in the industry for years and are skilled at what they do.
How do I pose and will you direct me?
Before your session take a look at some videos online and practice in the mirror. The more comfortable you are the better the images will be. Before each portfolio session I will give you some information on movement and things to do. But to get the best images possible it is important that you move on your own. An agent can tell when a shoot has been directed because the model is “green”. And you don’t want this to happen. But of course I will help you if you get stuck, it is part of the job to help you get the best model portfolio possible!
What is my approach to photography?
I have been working in the industry for rover 17 years and my approach has always been the same. On top of the photos the other half of my job is to make someone as comfortable as possible. For some people getting their photo taken can be as painful as going to the dentist. My approach is to create a relaxed stress-free environment. I talk to each client throughout the shoot, explain what we are going to do and eventually everyone relaxes. I treat everyone as if I have known them for years. The sessions are always fun, relaxed and we are an easy gong bunch.
